Friends For Life // The High Kings 2013

Annnnd here is the much awaited post! Still coming down from two amazing Irish festivals, seeing "the boys," getting a taste of their new material, and having a Folk 'n Rolling good time.

Anna and I have a long history of obsession. With four men. Irishmen. #cough You see, about five years ago we saw a video of an English Country Dancing group in Oregon. Long story short, not only did we love the dance (one of the many variations of the Scottish Gay Gordon, aka to fellow ECDers, 'Maries Wedding',) but the accompanying song was catchy, fun, unique. . .and Celtic.We did a bit of research, watched a couple youtube videos, bought a CD. . .

. . .and it's just about history from there.

I'm sure you really don't want to hear about the months of raving, the constant, 24/7 playing of the Debut album and later Memory Lane (shhh. . .don't ask our parents, ;) ) the long walks around the neighborhood debating whether the guy with the mustache was Martin. . .or Darren? The website stalking. The loud singing. The crazy love of two Italian American girls for a little emerald green Isle.

We don't fangirl often, but when we do, it's hardcore.

King Brian Dunphy doin' his stuff
Now, several years and ten concerts later, The High Kings aren't just our favorite Celtic music group. They are real people, friends, and man do they give the best hugs!

Much as I adore all the guys, there is a special place in my heart for Darren. Laugh crinkles, gorgeous singing voice. What's not to love?

A lot of people ask us--"HOW do you know The High Kings?" Simple, really.  The lads started doing US festival tours several years ago, and not only does our area host two large Irish festivals, but it is also a "center for the arts," attracting worldwide musical artists, Broadway shows, etc. For Anna and I, it all started one day in 2010 on a website-stalking-spree (thankfully we've grown out of that. :P ) We noticed tour dates, screamed awhile, bought tickets. . .you get the idea. :P I specifically remember daydreaming about seeing the Kings in concert. . .little did I think we'd actually meet our "idols." Even crazier? They come back, year after year.

There is a small bunch of us (you know who you are, B) ) who are the "original" area groupies. You know, the people jumping up and down, waving signs, pointing in excited whispers--"Finbarr.just.LOOKEDATME!" don't think too hard on that.

I can't post the videos I took of the new material, but folks, let me just say--Friends for Life--is going to be awesome. It took some getting used to, but the guys played samples at both festivals we attended. . .and I'm sold. Some songs are less Celtic, more folk, even slightly country. A fusion of traditional sounds, contemporary twist, and nearly all original, served only as the Kings can. I can hardly wait for it's release. :)

The Town I Loved So Well, by Mr. Darren Holden. It's one of my very favorite songs. Like someone said on Facebook, Darren makes it a classic. :)

Finally went all green for a concert, from my hair clips down to my flip flops. Oh, and in case you can't tell, these photos were taken at two different festivals. I picked up these tiny Celtic earrings this past Sunday and couldn't be happier, especially since I got a discount. Win!!

And there you have it. Madi, this post was especially for you. Happy craic!

Another chapter closed.

2012. In some ways, it was the most life-changing year of my life. So many places, so many faces, so many new, strange, unique, and completely God-made experiences! Those are the memories I want to keep forever. Others, like breakups with friends, hurt and distrust--I've buried. I've surrendered to my Jesus. And that's the miracle of 2012; learning the true meaning of complete surrender.  I'm done with worrying about living my life according to other people's standards; I am me. And I must follow His perfect, unique path for my future.

{via}

That's 2013. An adventure into the unknown. Pages--like my heart put into poetry--blank and waiting to be filled by the Master of life. Aside from the SAICFF (more on that in a minute) I don't have many plans. . . .and it's a little frightening. My heart left the Shire and my comfortable Hobbit hole long ago; The World is Ahead!

2012.

--my 21st birthday.  if i could stop time (because seriously, i'm getting old!) i'd stay right here. 21 is somewhere between maturing-young-adult and little girl who doesn't NEED (or want) to grow up. . .yet. and i'm happy that way. 22 will be great, i'm sure. . .but after 22 comes 23. . .then jumps to 25. and right now i don't even want to think 30. (Peter Pan, i'll always love you!) the interesting part of turning 22 is that i'll be celebrating it in TX. and i've already gotten a Kindle Fire HD as an early birthday gift. which is pretty awesome. :)

{taken in MI by my friend Danielle

--attended the 2012 San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival with a whole crew-ful of beautiful people. we drove alll the way from Ohio, and while i'll admit that overnight road-trips and i don't get along, it was one of the best experiences of my life! we sang, talked non-stop, rarely slept, ate nothing but sandwiches, granola bars, and M&M's, cried, laughed, debated, nearly lost the ball-bearings on a tire, stayed overnight in a parking lot (while said tire was being repaired,) ate more M&M's, watched countless movies, sang some more, met hundreds upon hundreds of people, talked a lot, had the van window broken into, danced, ate a few more granola bars, and bonded in the deepest way possible. i love my friends.

--drove down to Branson MO for Vision Forum's Titanic 100. it was a gorgeous event, full of speeches, special music, and a 3-course dinner on the showboat Branson Belle. plus Anna and I got to spend it with our daddy. :)

--lost my precious Banjo-man Nick in June. as some of you probably remember, Nick was the Yorkie i got as a therapy dog--at least, that's what i hoped he'd become. it's still very difficult for me to talk about, and i try NOT to think. putting down my puppy was the worst thing i've ever done--one of the hardest, most challenging decisions of my life. i went through a lot of guilt. i cried until my TMJ flared and my throat was sore. but now, looking back, weighing the facts, and through lots of support from my family, friends, and prayer, i know my decision was the right one.

{Nick in his Christmas jammies, about five months before he died}

i miss you, little buddy. thanks for leaving your squeaky-puppy for me to snuggle. it smells like you, and whenever i see it, i see YOU, scampering in the backyard with your beautiful, silky coat, floppy ears, and a mouthful of squeaky-puppy.
". . .because I knew you. . .I have been changed for good."

--spent over 2 months sewing a ballgown and all the trimmings for Beyond the Mask, an Independent Christian film by Burns Family Studios. Though extremely challenging, (think layer upon layer of clothing--all authentic, hand-drafted re-productions) working with the Ohio branch of the BTM costume team was hugely rewarding! i learned so much, and while i'm STILL not an expert seamstress. . .the seam-ripper and i aren't on the friendliest terms anymore. WIN!

{sneak-peak of my finished gown. the second picture is post-huge hairstyle. :P }

--went on an epic week-long vacation to North Carolina and my forever-beloved Tennessee. ok, so i had the worst head-cold of my life (curse you, sun-poisoning!) and hardly remember anything about Dollywood. . .but swimming for the first time ever in the real-life Atlantic ocean was total bliss. if that's what you'd like to call being knocked over by every single wave. it's what you get at 4'9. ;)  i loved exploring the tiny, secluded island of Baldhead--where Blackbeard and other pirates supposedly roamed, once upon a time--in a golf cart. that is, Blackbeard wasn't in a golf cart. we were. oh my, but all the little golf-cart garages! sooo adorable. i want one.

things to remember on vacation: always, always, ALWAYS wear sunscreen on the beach. otherwise ones knees are prone to turning bright-pink and hurting horribly. and ones face may turn red. and one may get a horrible head-cold. and then one may not be able to properly enjoy cabins-in-the-Smokies and hillbilly bluegrass jams across the NC/VA border. word to the wise.

--saw my friends and Celtic band The High Kings in concert. again. That makes 7 concerts now.

 {R-Darren (my favorit-est King) gives the BEST squishy-daddy hugs. he's an absolute sweetheart.}

--went to a rodeo for the first time. as in bull-riding. yes, i'm addicted.

{by Anna}

--lived through another Ohio Summer Rendezvous! it was my third year as main event planner and hostess, and thanks to my co-planners-in-crime, OSR '12 was truly the best yet.

--worked with the (MI branch) BTM Costume team AND appeared as an extra in the masquerade ball scene. see, this is why i haven't put up a proper BTM post. there was so much beauty in the 9 days we worked in MI, it can't be put into words.

sewing until 7:30 AM. . . root-beer floats at all hours of the night, deadlines, colds, eating way too much, laughing our heads off. seeing set for the first time! o.O i won't even TRY to explain. let's put it this way--i am an incredibly blessed girl. i have bonded with the most incredible people in all the world. i have lived in a household of crazy-amazing young ladies. i have BEEN IN A MOVIE.

and i was hugged twice by John Rhys-Davies.

the end.

i can't wait to see what God does with BTM--it's hugely fascinating, watching the Independent film movement revolutionize the world.

{pics my Anna}

to my Beyond the Mask family:
"Now we're back to the beginning
It's just a feeling and no one knows yet
But just because they can't feel it too
Doesn't mean that you have to forget
Let your memories grow stronger and stronger
'Till they're before your eyes
You'll come back when they call you
No need to say goodbye
You'll come back when they call you
No need to say goodbye".

you have no idea how much you mean to me. i love each and every one of you--for your uniqueness, your spirit and love for the Lord. for your purpose and oneness of mind. for embracing me in your circle, even though i knew you for only 9 days. thank you so much!

And now stretches this white, empty canvas--this thing called 2013. Already I see so many changes. Watching my "little sisters grow up, for example. how does that happen? just a couple weeks ago I had a deep heart-to-heart with my 15 year old sister Julia. Once these chats were secluded to the "older set". Julia isn't a little girl anymore. I've seen--and am seeing--her blossom into a young lady who is smart, thoughtful, sincere, and in ways very above me in maturity. That girl is going to teach me a lot, I can tell.

{our parents. i'm assuming dad got wet from the fountain. ;) }
{L-R: me, Julia, Maria, Lidia, Anna}

2013. Who are you? So far we've seen The Hobbit together, I've booked tickets to the SAICFF 2013, I'm turning 22. . .and everything stops there.

Write upon these pages Lord. Make them Yours. I give them to YOU.

Once upon a returned wanderer. . .

And here we have probably the quickest post I've EVER written. To say hello--and thank all my beautiful, lovely, sweet, incredibly-life-saving guest posters. Three cheers for Mikailah, Tory, and Bree. You gals are the best! Loved all your insight and tidbits, as I know the rest of blogdom did.

So much to say, so much to catch up with! Life is one big, whirling mass of things to do. . .blog posts to write (very important, naturally,) facebook to catch up with--have I mentioned that I reactivated my account? Long story there. And you know what, right now its a GOOD thing. People to say hello to--because they think I've neglected them. (have a little mercy! ;) ) Coffee to drain out of my system, (I'm in a seriously typey-mode. Have to do something with all this energy! Drank it {the coffee} from my new Mayberry mug. Sigh and total bliss.) Pictures to edit. . .a massive homeschool event in the planning stages. . .sewing to conquer. . .oh yeah--and you were wondering about my elusive love for a certain Narnian. Which *some* people have already figured out. . .not like there wasn't a huge hint plastered all over the place. Post coming ASAP.

The beach. The mountains. Experienced with the worst head cold of my life--but I survived. Only with God's grace. Really, I just wanted to crawl into bed. Oh yes, and square dancing. Vid's and pictures and more pictures your way soon. ANNNNNNDDD to end all this chatter with something to top all the best vacations and whirlwinds--I saw my dear friends, beloved, amazing, incredibly talented, best-ever High Kings on Sunday. Here's proof:

{this would be L-R, my dad, sister Anna, King Brian Dunphy, and me--in a candid moment.  Dad's good with it all, Anna's like, "eeeep it's Brian!", Brian's professional and all that good stuff, and I'm like, "this is exciting and all, but let's get it over with so I can catch up with everything at home?!?"}

Whew. I need to sit down. (Oh right, I am sitting. Ttyl, y'all!)

For sewing and Narnia!--an Awkwardly Awesome week {#4}

Chronicles of Narnia
{via}

aka--the adventures of returned warriors. Get ready--this is going to a huge, information-packed post. Have fun. ;) Note that all the pictures (unless otherwise specified,) were taken by my highly-talented photographer friend, Brandon Pieplow

As my sister Anna said in her facebook status: we went. we saw. we SEWED. Yes folks, I have returned from one of the most beautiful "retreats" ever--in all my 21 years. Sorely missing my long morning walks. . .I'm convinced it's impossible not to feel spiritual in the country. Go ahead, laugh--country is in my soul. I realized that all the more when I was alone; me, my prayers, my voice, and my God. Corn fields hedging me in on every side, open skies, a huge, over-grown puppy of a lab for company, a house full of amazing young people, and costumes waiting to be sewed. Oh, yeah. Remember my fears? Point made--the dresses weren't completed, but that may have to do with all the breaks Anna and I took--I mean, it was perfect outside--and there were kittens. Hey, there is more then a month more of costume production--so, even though we can't get the time off (for another week-long trip,) we should be heading back a couple of weekends.

{gorgeous countryside--I so miss my morning walks.} Photo courtesy of Brandon

So I'm turning this post into a review-of-the-trip AND Awkward and Awesome Thursday, since there were thousands of Awkward (some Awful) and Awesome  moments. Which, btw, before I continue, we finally--finally--saw all three Narnia movies. :gaspanddoublegasp: The books are great--the movies. . .are incredible. Except for The Dawn Treader--sorry to any fans out there--that is probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It reminds me of a computer game. But to quickly sum up--(this is going to be hard)--Prince Caspian was by far my favorite. Detest the romance to every degree possible--but the movie had just the right amount of dark and dramatic and suspense and reality and more dark and some funny. . . to make it reach into the depths of my soul. Which means it was good. ;) I need dark. Not gross dark--tragic, beautiful dark. :cue Les Miserables:

 kings and queens of old
{via}

Aslan was terrific--really loved putting the allegory into visual-perspective (though I have very mixed feelings in that department). He gave me the same choked-feeling I get whenever his name appears in the books. Very powerful character. Ok, now that I think about it, Eustace made The Dawn Treader. . .digestible. Best casting EVER. (quick, quick Michaela, sum up--get to the point!) Caspian's accent was AWESOME. Much approved. Reepicheep--"You people have no imagination!" Anna and I should have never heard that quote. ;) Lucy is adorable. . .but here's the big question: who was my all-time favorite character (next to Aslan, of course) ? So hard for me not to spill it all over this post. But this character belongs in a post of it's own. Loved this character in the book--loved this character before I saw the films--and loved this character ever more after watching the films. Just GUESS. Shouldn't be too hard.

Awesome

  • Finally knowing where The Vacation will take place--North Carolina. And my beloved Tennessee. The Lord worked the details out so perfectly--and gave us a completely new route/destination. I can hardly wait--2 days exploring NC beaches, a longish drive up to Pigeon Forge, then a few more days in a Smokey Mountain cabin. Hopefully I'll be able to recruit those guest posters this time.

  • Spending time with old friends--and bonding with several new ones. 9 days sewing together will do that to people. And yes, there was massive sewing--the basement was crammed full of machines, racks of historically accurate clothing, conversation, teasing, and MUSIC. Soundtracks, The High Kings, and Les Miserables reigned. I was satisfied.

  • Instantly connecting with someone then being asked, "do you know each other?" Kindred spirits!

  • Getting caught in an "almost tornado". Frightening while driving through wind and flying debris, but incredible to see our God's mighty hand! The long, wet walk in the woods that followed was magical--I loved discovering a civil-war era cemetery, piecing together the lives of a man who had 2--or was it 3--wives? o.O That and ice cream totally made up for the storm.

  • English and Scottish country dancing almost every night.

  • Watching The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe and Prince Caspian with a room-full of armored, sword wielding homeschoolers {at midnight}.

  • Random bursts of  "Onnnnneee daaaayyyyy moooorrreeee!"

Photo courtesy of Brandon

  • "Adopted brothers". The Lord has really blessed us as we've gotten older--with male friends who treat us as sisters, with respect and brotherly love. It's a special thing.

  • Standing outside in 90 mile per hour wind.

  • Cheesy-bread-pizza-and-pop night around The Guns of Navarone. I forgot how much I liked Gregory Peck. Acting just isn't acting nowadays.

  • Completing my petticoat, stays (curse those wretched things!) and shift.

  • Being called "a little girl" by a 4 year old, then later told, "you aren't my friend, your my family!" Our "secrets" every afternoon (aka my precious strawberry-cool mints. . .I was nice and offered the "to share" side :P ) were really special. . .to both of us.

{yes, there's a sneak peek of Anna and I!--watching the Ultimate game. Told you I'd bow out. ;) } Photo courtesy of Brandon

Awkward

  • Announcing "yeah, I started crying when Andrea Bocelli SPOKE" {at the concert}--to be met by blank stares.

  • Finding ones hosts cleaning spilled coffee--overflowed from the full pot YOU made. (totally hooked on Hawaiian and Peruvian coffee, btw. Yes, the fast is broken!)

  • Waking early for my morning walk. . .this time with Anna . . .only to be chased by a stray dog. (mind you, this is a very abbreviated version.) We walked three miles barefooted--fleeing for ones life and flip-flops don't mix--in 100* weather with no cell phones. Lovely. Thankfully an older woman stopped us from her porch (I could hardly walk at this point--literally,) offered us water, then drove us the rest of the way back. The Lord is so good!

  • Stopping every couple of minutes while sewing to ask "how do I do this again"?

  • Forgetting to pack ones toothbrush. Serous panic-time.

  • Random cries of "ow!" when ANOTHER person stepped on a needle, punctured a limb with pins, or sliced into an exposed finger. {battle-wounds of sewing}

haha. . .sorry, had to include that above pic. ;) This post is awkward enough with sewing and Narnia all mixed together. Two huge highlights of the week, obviously. :sigh: These aren't half the pictures or half of what we did--the baseball game and fireworks and out-doing a poorly done "comedy" act. . .and musket demonstrations and trying to get ready before 7:30 AM. Talking to oneself in an otherwise quiet room. Going completely off my diet and not caring. Stealing (ok, I had permission) a friends book light for late-night reading purposes. Hymn-singing in the van. The M&M party. But I shan't bore you any longer.

I probably won't be "seeing" you again for the next week or so. Be good, and keep a look-out for guest posters.
