Write Upon These Pages

{in tribute to the new year}

{pic of Yours Truly by my very-highly talented sister, Anna}

Write upon these pages Lord
This year unblemished, white
An empty, snowy canvas
Shadowed by uncertain "might".

My life has been a short one
Of sunbeams, dancing days
Golden, creamy moon-shine
Young hopes and carefree play.

Yes I know that You've been weeping
I see Your eyes so kind
Seas of deepest passion
Understanding and Divine.

You seem a distant shadow
A silent, phantom breath
Forever there, just watching
In merciful, forgiving stealth.

Write upon these pages Lord
This pointless, shallow life
Like trees unrobed in winter
When Jack Frost bears his knife.

Driving dreams to slumber
Hiding all within
The enchanted sleep of winter
When the world must cease her din.

And underneath that stillness
As Mother Nature floats
In patient mantled waiting
Of listless, untold hopes.

That's me, the girl there watching
From a window cold with dread
With a soul of crushing sorrow
Teaming with the living dead.

I scale a shining future
I hear the battles call
I feel it in my bosom
I see the towering wall.

That guards this time of waiting
These pages, stark and blank
Flowing with Life's-River
To it's barren, lonely bank.

Write upon these pages Lord
As I write on my white sheet
This page of perfect purity
Now black with smattered ink.

With thoughts of fairy-gardens
Of twinkling, starry hours
Swirling, sugared dew-drops
Tangled, rose-climbed bowers.

If life were only dream-land
How sweet, how fresh it'd seem
Skipping down the shoreline
Of a careless, bubbling stream.

No walls to keep me waiting
No window etched in snow
No page to call my canvas
No poem to flex my bow.

I'd skip across eternity
In endless, carefree dance
Waltzing with the dryads
A storybook romance.

Burst you now my bubble?
Oh cruel, relentless life!
God's there, forever calling
"Only look and see My Light."

You bend so I can see You
And into my ear You say
"Patience, my dear child
You and I will fight the day."

"This page is blank but for a time
This waiting but a test
And soon you'll see, my child
That in ME you'll find your rest."

"I'll help you fill these pages
With all your carefree dreams
But take each trial gladly
Things aren't always what they seem."

Write upon these pages Lord
That wall, you say it's Yours?
It's there, just like my window
Keeping safe a soul that burns

With a world so vast and waiting
With spoiled, travel-lorn plans
With a heart that wants a difference
To impact with giving hands.

And past those rainbow wanderings
Into something deeper still
The true, undaunted calling
Of my Masters Time and Will.

Only then I'll paint my canvas
With worlds of colored glass
And God with endless winter
Will melt my page at last.

in which we discuss lace-up boots.

i'm absolutely crazy about the lace-up boot trend this fall. no, completely obsessed with it. something in the slightly-weathered, vintage-y, victorian/steam punk, ladylike yet rugged look just screams "buy me and wear me". because they look simply smashing with skirts of all kinds, add a bit of class to casual, and other manners of wardrobe essential-ness.

Collected Stories BootCollected Stories Boot

my ultimate dream was a pair of knee-length riding style (not overly fond of the more "combat" type,)--like the ones above from Ruche. however European [lacy and/or open] knee socks with shorter skirts and mid-calf boots are adorable. in my humble opinion.

Modcloth and Ruche (which btw, I am now a proud affiliate of--see link at right,) have some of my favorites. i've scored both sites up and down like a ravaging wolf--salivating, coveting, shouting "oooh, look at THESE!" every five minutes (whenever i discovered a new "dream boot") and wishing money grew from trees. the works. i'm crazy about boots as it is, but the lace-ups are just too much. which is why i finally broke down and bought a pair.

what do you think, ladies? are you crazy about the lace-up trend too, or do you prefer the dressier, more traditional styles? knee length, mid-calf, or bootie?--and i'm curious, how would you style the lace-up look? personally i think they look super chic with skirts and dresses. imagine a pair peaking from a classic straight-cut skirt (with belt, tucked blouse and cardigan for a completed look.) can't wait to style mine throughout the rest of the cold-weather season. now that the honey is washed out of the laces we're good to go. ;)

Dear. . .

A cozy day deserves a cozy post. Join--or ignore--me as I revel in candied caramel candles, (in Julia's words, the house smells like breakfast,) the promise of a toasty evening eating pudding and watching 'Life with Father', mugfuls of fallish-concoctions (coffee related,) mustard accents (slightly obsessed with my new flats,) and well--have you figured out my family REALLY makes an occasion out of things? ;)

Autumn, welcome home.

{photo by me}

dear "Spunkin"--yes, most folks know you as Starbucks Spiced Pumpkin Latte. But you hadn't met this very-blonde gal until yesterday, and somehow your lovely name was confused in her vocabulary. Thus "Spunkin" was born. . .and I dare say you will never be Spiced Pumpkin Latte to her again.

Lets put it all this way--rabid Starbucks boycott-er as I am. . .this drink is GOOD. Pounds of sugar, pumpkin spice and whipped cream will do that to burnt coffee. It just screams fall. And made me perfectly happy.

dear John Rhys-Davies--I still haven't comprehended that you are actually. . .actually. . .actually IN Beyond the Mask. o.O  Which means I.will.meet.you.

Someone pick me up off the floor. (and come quickly, October!)

dear Ohio Summer Rendezvous--Thank you for cooperating--no, thank the Lord for unfrazzling my nerves, setting everything straight, smoothing out the details. . .and making this OSR the best ever. Truly. I've been coordinating this event for three years now (with help from the best crew in the world!) and for the first time ever--seriously--I felt totally in control and at peace. It was completely beautiful, completely touched by God. . .something I can hardly explain!

{photo by Brandon Pieplow}

I'm having withdrawals.

dear Cameron Macintosh--Gotta say, no matter my usual judgment of you. . .I think this Christmas will see a history-making, world illuminating, life changing. . .totally Yours Truly approved movie. Still skeptical of the cast. . .and if it's anything like the play (which by the looks of things it is,) the rating will be very adult. o.O HOWEVER this video gave me the same in-the-throat, distinctly Les Miz emotion I had at the play two years ago. (um. . .I'm a VERY passionate person. ;) ) Behold all:

dear yesterday's devotion--Thank you for reminding me that I CAN please God! Life is all about pleasing Him, however He also delights IN ME. It's funny how simple truths can suddenly bear new light. Praise the Lord for his Promises!--popularity and recognition may "feel good" but HE delights in those who follow and obey Him.

dear Sherlock Holmes--You are perfect for cozy fall days (Spunkin in hand. A fire wouldn't be bad either. . .) We've already had our first long chat. . .it was quite--eventful. To say the least. And I'm fascinated. Looking forward to more meetings in 'The Complete Sherlock Holmes'.

dear date with dad tomorrow--Fall day on the Square? Hmm. I'll rate the world a happy place.

dear Hobbit Day--I'm a bit of a LOTR's nerd, even though I haven't seen the movies. (k, don't judge, I finally saw Narnia. . .and read the books. . .and I'll be taking The Hobbit out of the library soon.) But anywho--this song--did you know there's a musical?--is my latest obsession. Because all things hobbity are warm and yummy. And I'm acting like a silly fangirl. So I shall stop right now. :P

{more than I'd like to admit. . . :P via}

dear person reading this post--Please, follow my blog. I mean, I sort of need to reach 300 followers by October  if I am to unleash The Huge (or at least, very grand, ;) ) giveaway. Do us both the favor.

{random, yes, but I **have** to share some of the latest photos from Beyond the Mask! A little hyped? via}

dear posts that need posting--I'm getting there. See, I have a life (or at least I pretend,) and well, things get busy. But, dear posts that need posting, I have not forgotten you. The minute life slows down (that DOES happen, right?) you shall be written and grace the pages of my blog.

dear life--No, no need to remind me again. I should get off the computer. What? My gown for Beyond the Mask? But I don't want--ok, fine. I'll pleat the skirt. Give me a minute, I'm trying to log off! Sheesh. Huh, what's that? Oh. Yeah, your right. Life never stops. . .I'm convinced.

Old Navy--color trends--80's flashback // lovin' 2012 spring style!

I usually don't follow trends. Accessories are always overdone (in my humble opinion,) and for years nothing but dark, masculine colors were found in stores. Very unappetizing to a girly-girl's taste. It's interesting to see all the Japanese-inspired clothing making it's way to the US--the Lolita--"cupcake" style, which, low and behold, celebrates PINK and all sorts of feminine color. (!!)
Color trends for 2012
Shopping with my mom is a blast. Especially clothes shopping. Love the stares when folks see two women in skirts--I used to take offense, but now I realize it's not WHAT I'm wearing {because  people do wear skirts!} It's that "dressing up" has gone out of style. Wearing ones pj's out has become the accepted standard--no standard. And we all have to deal with it. Hey, I wasn't bred that way. . .it's insulting. Can't afford nice clothes? Funny, I can't either--but even thrift stores offer decent tops, slacks, skirts. . .and as a recent talk-show host wondered, "what happened to pretty?" If it's not rag-bag, women are ultra "stylish"--AKA all skin, little clothing. "Hot" is the new attractive. . .but ever notice the saggy-panted hoodlum standing aside to let the well dressed lady pass? Well dressed meaning "put together"--a nice blouse, even casual wear that is neat and classy. Oh, and feminine colors aren't a bad idea. I'm tired of seeing women in hard, lifeless shades. Give me a flowery, girly-girl top any day. And ask any guy--feminine, modest ladies are most attractive.
old navy--peach, mustard, and taupe

*end of rant* Even though I don't care for most trends (I like to keep things very simple, something my Italian mother has always stressed,) the clothes/colors this spring are AMAZING. And feminine. Especially--just about everything--at Old Navy. The 80's are back with bright, cheery, florescent pops of turquoise, lilac, mud, misty gray. . .and my favorite combination--cream and/or taupe, mustard, and peach. Mm. {I also love mustard/royal purple.} All 1980's, reminiscent of the Lolita and Mori styles {toned down, of course. We aren't seeing baby-doll dresses or pink wigs. Yet.} I actually bought the stripe-y skirt above, AND the peasant top in both peach and mustard. There are so many pieces that would look fantastic with that skirt. Peasant tops are my new favorite. Trendy, yes, yet timeless enough to give that fun, different, classy feel.

Old Navy is my best friend right now. I don't necessarily adore every item in the above pics, but! just giving color examples. I don't feel like searching for turquoise right now. . .but could you imagine the possibilities? Which reminds me--adoring the weather right now. Sunny skies. Raspberry-jam-chocolate bars. Walks by the lake. Pooh sticks. Does anyone still play Pooh-sticks? It's one of those cozy sorts of things one never grows too old for. What are you loving right now?--tell me about your warm weather adventures, the colors that make you squeal this spring. Girly things like that. Menfolk beware. ;) Note that this blog is undergoing many changes. . .a new name {again}--new design. And there is much more to tell regarding the SAICFF.  B-)

little black dress and a peppermint mocha: eShakti product review

I am so excited to share with you the scrumptious sample dress I received from eShakti, a company that produces modest and beautiful clothing for women. The most ingenious part? Each eShakti item can be customized according to body type, style, often even color! There are dozens of dresses, skirts, and tops to choose from--ladies, your hunt is over! For a teeny-tiny person like me, this thought is thrilling. Not only can I buy clothes that fit me perfectly, but in the exact style I want. When I first discovered eShakti I pounced on the idea. Really. . .it was a bit obsessive-compulsive. ;) I scored the site up and down, saving links to all my favorite styles. "Ooh, I can lengthen this one, or add cap sleeves--no, make that puffed sleeves--to that one."

So. Long story short, I wrote eShakti and asked to do a product review. Jennifer, the Head-Marketing manager for the company, very graciously worked with me. ;) And that isn't an understatement. For awhile there were sizing issues. . .my bad. {or else this review would have been posted months ago.} Even after all that fiasco I was allowed to pick a second sample, it was shipped in decent time, and viola! A perfectly adorable little black dress, just as I'd always imagined. I have a large rib cage, so the fitted bodice is a bit snug, but over all I am VERY satisfied. The very full pleated skirt and cap sleeves add a 1950s, vintage flair.

I chose the standard size, rather then customized, for this particular dress. {custom can mean anything from dress length to neck shape--I love how this ensures modesty according to one's taste/preference.} They {standard size} run a bit small, so I suggest getting one size bigger then your usual measurements.  For the customized option, measure exactly according to your size.

And here I must break to show you THIS: A peppermint mocha, translated into heaven-in-a-cup. I thought coffee was perfection itself. . .then I tried a mocha. Now--I think I'm dying. Add this to my obsessed list.

Nooowww. . .after savoring every homey, holiday-ish sip of pepperminty mocha, head over to eShakti.com to order your very own creation. Annnddd use this special promotional code to receive $20 off of your purchase: LASTROSE0811 The offer is valid through 12/31/2011.

if i had a british accent. . .

. . .i'd never shut up.

Pinned Image

isn't everything happyful about this picture? you see it and HAVE to smile. what does it have anything to do with british accents? nothing. except that i'm infatuated with them (british *including* irish and scottish,) and they make me smile. very wide. i don't shut up anyway, and i put my mastered falsetto accent/s to use often. so the quote almost counts. . .oh, and if you noticed, i changed my header/theme again. earlier this week anna and i ventured into "the shire," a scrumptious, open field behind our house - covered in golden rods and bright orange poison ivy. it's our very own magical place, a tiny bit of the country, even though tops of houses peak through; we ignore them. because it truly is a sacred place, where one enters silently, breathlessly. . .then gives way to frolics and photo-shoots and all manners of sisterly goofiness.

i've decided i'm part hobbit. (notice part. hairy feet and too many meals don't count.) that would explain  the shortness and anna's sudden infatuation with frodo. i think she wants to marry him. o.O and i'm starting to adore him too. it's all her fault. which reminds me - 'into the west' is probably the worlds most gorgeous song. . . .the instrumental version gives me goosebumps and thrills and makes me cry. so does the braveheart theme, 'the love of a princess.' the music store should be getting a visitor soon. . .btw, i'm so glad you enjoyed 'my heart will go on.' :) i really appreciated everyone's comments/suggestions. thank you so much! - film scores are my latest craze, listening and playing them; i can't get enough! any recommendations?

a sneak peak of the photo-shoot. here you can see a bit of "the shire" in all its painted yellow .
there is nothing more beautiful then a reenactment by torch and candle light, on an island in the middle of the ohio river, under a blanket of clear, star-filled sky. siiggh. a ferry ride from bank to bank, costumed interpreters, "ghosts" roaming among the ancient walnut grove, carriage's drawn by ponies at full canter; wood smoke, gingerbread and irish sea chanties. only this time i wasn't a spectator. together with a group of good friends, donned in our finest regency garb - we were at blennerhasset island. . .to dance. {click}

just amazing. (yes, i overuse that word.) but it's true. english country dancing in a tiny roped off area of the mansion, boiling to death in our costumes, nervous as groups of tourists flocked in to watch. it was like stepping into a movie. . .as if it were a real, moving, living story - our little story, swept back in time, imagining, experiencing. there aren't words for the thrill of it all. spending that special evening with such wonderful ppls made it all the better. . .eating enormous oatmeal cookies, talking theology until 2:30 AM, waking up to a Southern Ohio country morning, more conversation around the breakfast table. . .then the long drive home, more talking, and way too much chocolate. like yesterday, when mom and i had our little shopping date. what could possibly be better then chocolate, sushi, more chocolate, adventures at a candle warehouse. . .and a coffee brand stating: "coffee, chocolate, men. . . the richer the better." perfection.

celebrating fall. thinking of (and wearing) knee length boots, eating crunchy-delicious Melrose apples, loving my little nick, who is getting so big and obedient, praising the Lord for a new part-time nanny position. and even though i have to fake a british accent. . .smiling. {don't worry. . .i'll never shut up anyway. ;) }

raindrops in my day.

drizzle. clover decorated puddles; the "real" irish kind. there must be a shamrock in there somewhere, buried under mounds of bright green leaves. a puppy, suddenly rat-like and skinny under his wet coat. there is a crispy fallish tone in everything. under running yorkie feet, splashing through the yard. in my carefree house clothes, spattered with mud; yelling encouragement to my "baby", not caring what the neighbors think as we chase a giant frisbee. twice the size as nick, his tiny furry self flies along to catch it; jumping into potential danger, paying little heed to my scolding."mr. bingley", the shy, mysterious young man who just moved in. each time he passes on his bike, anna teases, "smile at mr. bingley jane, smile at mr. bingley!" ah, sisters. they are everywhere indoors, FIVE of them - some "helping" with nick while the older ladies bustle about in a frenzy of scissors, piles of fabric, and thread. civil war ball gowns. not exactly perfect, rose and buttercup satin; coming together at last,  elegant, making us feel like queens. pinterest. an addicting blogger paradise, taking up hours of time between sewing and puppy-chasing. i think i'm in love. this, i've noticed, is one of my favorite bloggy phrases. because i'm random. colder weather. leather gloves, knee-length boots; cozy sweaters and long, brightly colored knee-high socks. coffee. one of heaven's greatest gifts. there is simply no life without it, especially when drunk before a pinterest-happy screen. new blog title. it celebrates the pearls of thought i scatter throughout this blog; little nothings. . .i hope you like it.

a mid-summer nights dream

for days now i've been wondering, "what on earth can I possibly blog about?" right now i'm in the doldrums of lazy summer, do-nothing days. yet when I stand back and look at the passing weeks, there are little, simple things sprinkled here and there that add color, happiness to each day.

as i said in my facebook status yesterday:

colorful, flowery sundress. check. shades from disneyland. check. beautiful (humid) july afternoon. check. loving family. check. blessed? CHECK. (even in the earthly things. the Lord is always good!)

dream
sewing a civil war ball gown - big and beautiful, swish-y hoop skirt . . .layers of  shimmering fabric. Then the ball itself; dashing blue Yankee soldiers, grey-coated rebels; dancing under a blanket of starry sky.

my fabric. isn't this just delicious?  - i could eat it. the shiniest, satiny-est, pinkish pink ever. i'm in love.
mid-summer reality
rushing with my mom to jo-anne fabric an hour before closing. . .paging through pattern books in search of the perfect gown. viola! simplicity never fails. the question is, will i? a visit to a quaint living history museum. . . news of  a civil war ball, a reenactment.  i love to sew, dance, history. why not take a gamble? now i'm staring at a pile of creamy, rosy-pink fabric, wondering just what i got myself into. boning. . .honestly? o.O

dream
living in the country, acres and acres of open land; a little house with an old-fashioned swing in the front yard. all within practical distance of shopping and charming charlie, of course. . . i am seriously a country girl at heart. my families half acre doesn't leave much room for imagination - of running barefoot through fields, and most importantly, raising ducklings. this is very important of course. ducks are a passion of mine. i just love them. . .and to be perfectly honest, i've become somewhat of a professional-duck photographer. :nods:

"all God's creatures got a place in the choir, some sing low, some sing higher - some sing out loud on the telephone wire, some just clap their hands, or paws, or anything they've got . . ."

mid-summer reality
sitting in front of a computer screen, smiling fondly at the thought of watching the sun go down over a lake. there is nothing more relaxing then lolling on a dock, watching boaters, laughing at the antics of fellow "there's nothing to do tonight, lets sit at the pond," families, and oohing-and-ahhing over all the ducks.

then there's the crab-apple trees, hemmed in by a fence and overlooking fields of nothing. pretend the tourists aren't there; here in this corner its easy to forget them. here, sitting on top of the world - aka a fence post, i can reach the branches, feel the breezes cooling my neck. ohhh. . .i could have lived in that moment forever.

dream
getting a music degree. . .teaching piano out of the home. ten long years have passed since my first desire to own a new piano; still i struggle along on my 100 year old upright - my baby. but she's ready to retire. i'm not.

mid-summer reality
just back from hobby lobby, a new pile of fabric to stare at. . .listening to my all-time favorite tenor, andrea bocelli. in september the annual event my family and i host for home school graduates, the ohio summer rendezvous, will arrive, bringing with it yet another ball (masquerade! see why i need a new gown?) old and new faces, and countless memories. i can hardly wait. while most of the work is computer-related, planning has kept me BUSY. right now i'm playing 'my heart will go on' over, and over, and over. . .driving my family crazy, and enjoying myself thoroughly.  it has to sound perfect, not to mention memorized, for the OSR talent show.  and who knows - perhaps, Lord willing, the free piano i'm looking into will actually be the one . . .

special alert, side-noted reality*~

the cupcake shop on our square. how cute can something get? just a tiny store front stand, filled with nothing but cupcakes, in every flavor imaginable. it is such fun, ordering a fattening, bad-for-you cupcake, and sitting at the victorian gazebo, people watching and whatnot.*~

One more dawn, one more day...! and specialness of the season.

Happy New Years Eve, dear readers! :) I've been wanting to put this post up for several days now, but never had the chance. Well here it is at last!

Ah...right now I'm listening to 'One Day More', from the musical Les Miserables. No matter how many times I listen to that song, I never get tired of it. And it just seems so appropriate for today, considering we are at the brink of the New Year.

"Tomorrow we'll discover what our God in heaven has in store!
One more dawn, One more day, One day mooooore!"

So triumphant. Makes me all tingly inside, thinking of all the potential possibilities 2011 may bring. This evening I spent several minutes in deep prayer, dedicating the coming year to Christ. The future is both frightening yet exciting: 2011 will mark my 20th year. Whew, how time flies! I'm looking forward to reading the Bible in a year with some friends on facebook, getting my temps (no, I don't drive! I know how...but thats another story, ;) ) and most importantly, striving for a closer relationship with my Jesus.

There are SO many highlights to look over this past year...so for now I'll only mention a few special Christmasy things...

As you all know...I am a HUGE Andrea Bocelli fan. Possibly his biggest fan ever. ;) And I like opera. Now of course I am *extra* choosy when it comes to opera, and mostly I only like Italian. Female singers of most sorts are an especially a big no. So why do I say I like opera? lol
Anyhow. Carmen is an opera I can tolerate, and it isn't even Italian! But that's besides the point. Anything featuring Andrea's incomparable, glorious, magnificent, stunning voice blows me away.
:sigh:

Shortly before Christmas I received a package from one of my closest friends, Nicole. Boldly written  on the package were the words "do not open until Christmas". O-k. Tough as it was to wait, it was very much worth it! I was so blessed to find this precious keepsake when I *finally* opened my loot...
Sooo lovely! I just adore the little box.

The tiny picture features me, Nicole, and our mutual friend Hannah. Love you girls!

Somehow I think this photo should have come *before* the one of the necklace (above.)  hehe Ah well. Isn't the drawer the yummiest thing ever?

An especially special part of this year was "meeting" one of my bestest friends, Flop (aka Alexandra :P )  via Blogger. Ally has been an encourager, entertainer, buddy, girly-friend, and all around blessing! Love you tons and tons, Flop!
The above pictures are pretty much self explanatory. If I'm the worlds biggest Andrea fan, I am a world-renowned, fanatic aficionado of Les Miserables. Oh, and dark chocolate. Ally knows me a little too well! ;)

I made a batch of traditional Italian Toto cookies for our *very* quiet Christmas day. My family doesn't make a huge to-do about Christmas as it is, but we do have a few special traditions. "Toto" is one of them.
Oooh...nutty,  chocolaty, not overly sweet, balanced perfectly with aromatic allspice and cinnamon. (I usually omit the cloves.) Hungry yet? ;)

Italian Toto Cookies

3 cups flour
3/1 c. cocoa
3/4 tsp baking powder
1/3 tsp allspice
1/3 tsp cinnamon
3/4 c. butter
1 c. sugar
3 eggs
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup chopped nuts
Glaze

Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder, allspice, cloves and cinnamon. In a separate bowl, cream together butter and sugar. In another bowl beat eggs. Stir eggs into creamed mixture with vanilla. Stir in flour mixture, then nuts. Form into 1 inch balls and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes. Prepare glaze. Frost cookies while still warm.
*I make the glaze mixture "wet" enough to just dip the tops of the cookies lightly.

Glaze
1 c. powdered sugar
3/4 tsp vanilla
1tbsp milk

Combine sugar and vanilla. Stir in milk a little at a time until of spreading consistency.

Enjoy!!

2011 - here I come*~
